The Last House on Needless Street - Catriona Ward

Image
Ted lives alone with his cat Olivia in a dilapidated clapboard house at the end of a dead end street. He is unemployed, drinks and suffers from several undiagnosed mental problems. His daughter Lauren visits from time to time, but their relationship is strained and often violent. A woman named Dee moves into the abandoned house next to Ted's. When she starts looking for her sister who was kidnapped years ago, Ted's life slowly begins to turn into chaos. The Last House on the Needless Street reminded me why I love twisted and strange stories. Unfortunately, I have neglected some of them because of fantasy, but because of that, the enjoyment of reading is greater. This is a very unusual book. It is written from three perspectives, Ted's, Olivia's and Dee's. While Ted's and Olivia's narratives are in the first person, Diana's are in the third. The style is very strange and, honestly, it took me a while to get used to it. When I realized that there are chapt...

The Wolf (Ulven) - Samuel Bjørk

The bodies of two murdered 11-year-olds were found in a field near Uddevalla in Sweden. A white rabbit lay between them. The case remained unsolved. Eight years later, near Oslo, two boys were killed in a similar way. Between them was a dead fox. Holger Munch, the newly appointed head of the Homicide Special Unit, needs all the help he can get to solve the case. He received a tip about a young cadet, Mia  Krüger , who is getting unusually high results in the academy exams. Although she dreams of a career in special forces, while spending nights searching for her missing twin Sigrid, Mija agrees to help on the case. Together, Munch and  Krüger  dig into dark, sordid cases that turn out to be more intriguing than either of them could have imagined. Adding fuel to the fire is the news of the disappearance of two more boys. I fell in love with Bjørk's writing last year after reading I'm Traveling Alone. I just swallowed the previous three parts. Although they investiga...

Galaxy Stern is the most unusual freshman at Yale. At the age of twenty, she was the only survivor of multiple unsolved murders. But just then the unthinkable happens. While lying in the hospital, she is offered a second chance: a full scholarship to one of the most elite universities in the world. What is the matter, and why exactly? Alex arrives in New Haven with a precise assignment given to her by her mysterious benefactors: to monitor the activities of secret societies at Yale. It is well known that these eight societies, in addition to ruling the campus for generations, create the future rich and powerful, from politicians to the biggest players on Wall Street and in Hollywood. However, their occult rituals turn out to be far more sinister and unusual than anyone's paranoid imagination could imagine. Gods and aliens almighty, I don't know where to start. Lest I always be negative and look for a hair in the egg, let's start from the positive side of the novel. The stor...
